I’ll be wearing these 5 coat styles on repeat this winter

Like it or not, ’tis the season to pull out your coats. I’m a “like it not” when it comes to the cold. I get all pale, have to buy lotion by the gallon and I have a condition that makes my extremities go numb (Reynaud’s). Plus I don’t like turning on the dry heat, running a humidifier… ugh!

Okay, enough complaining. Know what makes winter a little more fun? Skiing? Nah. Snow days? Nope. I work in fashion, so for me it’s a coat, Silly, I know but as a stylist that’s what makes winter more fun.

Read on to see the styles I believe every woman needs in her closet….

Wool Coats

My 5 Must-Have Coat Styles for the Winter Season

I have a love/hate affair with wool. I can be sensitive to the fabric. In a coat, however. with layers between us, I love it for its classic look and breathable warmth.

A wool coat (or a good imposter) is necessary because it can be worn with your dresses, your workwear AND your weekend lounge habits.

I’d say have at least one neutral (like black), a classic pattern (like a tweed, plaid or herringbone) and just because it’s fun – add color.

Faux Fur Coats

I think my favorite type of coats of all are the big furry kind. Who doesn’t want to be wrapped up in a teddy bear… or a wooly mammoth? The bigger, more oversized, thicker it is the more of a statement it makes too.

While I adore a cream or a camel because they’re chic, a loud color is the one that will start conversations. Who doesn’t like to hear “I love your…?”

Rain Coats

My 5 Must-Have Coat Styles for the Winter Season

Now to be practical for a moment… a raincoat is a necessity no matter where you live. Even the desert gets an occasional sprinkle that could mess up your hair. I prefer a raincoat with a little length to it. I want to keep both my top AND my bottom dry. I like a coat that cinches at the waist if possible. If I have to wear plastic, let’s give it some shape, please.

Again, I believe one should have a neutral version and a color. A splash of color (pun intended) just makes a dreary day a little brighter.

Trench Coats

While Burberry is the classic investment trench, a wonderful treat, you can certainly get the same look for less. A beige version is the most classic, but if that’s not your color, go for black, navy, olive green…

Puffer Jackets

I’ve been wearing my The North Face black puffer coat for 8 years, faithfully. It’s my warmest coat and built to last. Of course, over the years I’ve added a bright blue and an army green too. Need a new warm puffer? Try this patent black or maybe a teal green!
