I Shopped M St. In Georgetown, DC In Search of Summer-Ready Looks

For reference on sizes, I’m almost 5’4″ and typically wear an XS or S in tops, a size 4 in bottoms, and a 26 in denim. TTS or sized up/down will be noted.

I recently went shopping on M St. in Georgetown, DC in search of new pieces for summer to share with my clients.

I spent all day going from store to store, pulling pieces and styling looks. Below are some of my favorites that I found.

I must say that denim shorts and a tee shirt aren’t all that exciting, BUT I needed to share these cool shorts.

You see…. they aren’t really denim. This is the Miramar short and they are actually made of the most lightweight drapey Trompe L’oeil cotton.

Sounds fancy, right?

The denim look is actually a screen print, no denim involved. Unless you get up close and check for pockets, you’d have no idea these aren’t actually denim shorts. It feels like you’re not wearing much of anything and in the summer, that’s perfect.

When I asked the salesperson for a top to pair with them she brought me a tee, a simple tee. I must say it’s REALLY soft and stretchy. I loved it too, just didn’t make for a really exciting outfit.

Practical… but not exciting. It’s all true to size.

You can’t beat a white cotton dress on a hot day.

This one is pretty basic in the front, but turn her around and there’s a cutout in the back! It’s at the bottom of the back so you don’t have to worry about feeling exposed or if your bra will show…. just the perfect air conditioning. This was true to size and as you can see… not see through. Hooray!

Oh… I’m not much of a clog person but you must check out the open toe clogs in a rich brown suede that I actually loved and would pair with this dress.

I haven’t taken a lot of interest in Reformation since I felt it was geared toward a young woman, not someone my age.

While in Georgetown I heard a woman older than me say she was going to “The Ref” as it’s called to find a wedding guest dress. I was intrigued and decided to give it a go.

Once inside I found the store IS more for the 20-30 something woman but there were quite a few very cool things that a woman of any age can wear.

There on the rack was the denim skirt that everyone is wearing this season and that keeps selling out. It’s that hot of an item. This trend is going to continue way into the chilly season so get yourself a denim maxi or to-the-knee skirt now and wear that thing to death.

I paired these with an oversized button up tied at the waist in the prettiest shade of deep teal. Get the skirt. If between sizes, size up for sure.

I had picked up a mixed media top (poplin puff sleeves with a knit stretch bodice) and the combo was a hit. You’ll be seeing this shirt on me quite often. Love. It comes in white and a light sage green as well. The green is on sale!

I protested when the salespeople brought me shorts to try. I’m not feeling as great in shorts this year. I’ll be darned, though, these were so good. The tailored fit was impeccable, the linen had a fabulous feel, and the color was bold and bright. I’m wearing a size 4, TTS, and they are relaxed and comfortable.

Adorable, wouldn’t you agree?

This VB shirtdress is a classic and can be paired with a sneaker or a heeled sandal or even a pump for work. It’s a great vacation dress too. It’s just all around great! It’ll never go out of style. You’ll have it forever and wear it for years to come.

I’ve seen one of my stylist friends wearing this dress and loved it. I have denim dresses in all sorts of styles and just find them so EASY to style! Just like your favorite jeans, they “go” with everything. The fabric is incredibly soft, lightweight and you’re going to want to wear this all the time.

Now, one thing I will say is to wear accessories in brown tones or lighter shades and skip the black with this light wash. The asymmetrical cut makes it interesting.

I sized up to a 6 because the bottom was a bit snug in the 4. The top is meant to be relaxed while the bottom is meant to be fitted.

Again, I’d wear this with clean white “street” sneakers, a slide (like a Birkenstock), an open toed clog or even an ankle boot. A block heel sandal would work too, whatever you fancy.

The linen blend pants I’m wearing here are the lightest weight. These were a size too big so I did try my regular size in white and they were a beautiful fit and were not see through (hooray). The top I’m wearing here went home with me with only a few left online. Worth mentioning, I love wide leg cropped pants with heeled mules.

Looking for “age-appropriate” shorts? I found a pair! The linen paperbag waist here are dressy enough for a blouse and heeled sandals, but work just as well with a fitted tank or tee. I will always make room for fresh striped tops like this one. It’s easy to pair with any color, under jackets and with florals too.

A satin camisole is great to have on hand to wear alone or under a blazer, to layer under a sheer top. This one is beautiful, has adjustable straps and fits nicely, true to size. Both of these satin separates are best sellers for good reason. Psst… the bow on the front will also conceal a little tummy.
